Answer: IVF also known as ‘in vitro’ fertilisation is a form of conception governed by the 1990 act. This gives people access to facilities of Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) to reproduce and the state assisting so far as practicable to do so. The ART allows Sophie and Tom access to IVF in order to produce a baby which is a perfect tissue match for Joseph. Importantly HFEA must control the activities of the clinics otherwise resulting in a criminal offence. A key principle is who has the consent for the donated embryo to be used?
