Answer: The original aim when forming the European Union (EU) was to facilitate economic integration within an internal market. The parameters for the internal market was set out in Article 26 of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union (TFEU), which states the four freedoms, ‘an area without internal frontiers in which the free movement of goods, persons, services and capital is ensured.’ Article 18 of the TFEU seeks to secure movement rights as it prohibits discrimination based on nationality. Additionally, Article 20 of the TFEU establishes citizenship of the EU, stating that every national of a Member State (MS) is a citizen of the EU.
