Question: Describe both the aims of sentencing and the factors which are taken into account when sentencing an individual.
Answer: In this essay I will be describing the different aims of sentencing. Sentencing is the judicial act of a judge punishing an offender for their crime/offence. Section 142 of the Criminal Justice Act 2003 states that there are five main aims of sentencing which the court must regard to when punishing a sentence on anyone over the age of 18: to punish the offender, reduce crime, reform and rehabilitate the offender, protect the public and to make reparations. Also, when passing a sentence the court must look into other factors that determine 50% of the sentence. I will now go on to describe these in further detail.......(short extract)
